Simple Black/African Hair Care Tips

African-Americans commonly have dry and coarse curly hair that lacks elasticity compared to other people from other ethnicities. African or Black natural hair types ranges from wavy, curly, to kinky. And with each hair type there are different hair tips for you to follow.

Here are some tips to care for your Black Hair Type:

Tip #1:     For wavy hair, it is advised to use a high quality boar bristle brush. When blow drying this type of hair, use a diffuser to partially dry it. You can use hair products such as anti-frizz hair creams or hair lotions to manage the frizz and style your hair. You should not completely dry your hair using a hairdryer but allow some parts to air dry. Too much use of hairdryers can increase hair damage and sometimes lead to hair breakage.

Tip #2:     Use only wide tooth combs for curly hair. It is not recommended for you to frequently brush or comb curly hair because this will cause damage and frizz to the hair. If you want to dry this type of hair, never use a towel. You can either air dry it or blow dry it with a diffuser attachment. Like wavy hair, you can also use hair products such as leave-on conditioners and anti-frizz hair creams or mousse to manage the frizz in your hair.

Tip #3:     Coily or kinky hair can be very hard to deal with most of the time. The problem of this type of hair is that when it gets tangled up, it’s very hard to untangle. You can use a wide tooth comb or your own fingers to fix your hair. The best time to do this is when your hair is still wet. Applying lots of conditioner to your hair will make the task easier and faster. Just make sure that you do not pull your hair so hard for this will damage or break it. You wouldn’t want that to happen now, would you?

Like all kinds of hair from all ethnicities, proper hair regimen is needed to have beautiful and healthy hair. You have to have a good shampoo and a good conditioner that best suits your hair type in order for you to bring out its true beauty and in order for it to be healthy. It is wise to have your hair trimmed every 3-4 months. This is to get rid of any damage or split ends at the tips of your hair. Your hair is your crowning glory. Depending on how you take care of it, it can either enhance your looks, or bring you down.
