Since man has always struggled to get his thatch back on, he has been devising methods for the same. Even the epic personality Julius Caesar used a mixture of horse teeth, bear grease, deer marrow and burnt mice to try cure his hair loss as devised by Cleopatra. At those times even using the urine of hedgehog was thought to be a great idea though the smell was horrendous!

So what is the truth about such cures for baldness? The truth remains that there is no actual cure for this one problem. Though there have been devised many lotions which claim to slow down the balding process, yet most of them have not been able to reverse or even stop balding.

Prescription for Male Hair Loss:

Food and Drug Administration prescribe two great drugs for balding – Finasteride and Minoxidil (Rogaine).

1. Finasteride:

This can be found in Propecia and Proscar. Showing positive signs for male balding, this drug has been effective for stopping male hair loss and in some cases even reversed the balding process as well. Earlier prescribed by doctors for benign prostrate hyperplasia, now we know that it acts as a 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitor. In other words, finasteride can help you block 5-Alpha reductase that is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT(dihydrotestosterone) and causing male pattern baldness.

-- The drug shows effects in a time of three months. Will stop hair loss for as long as one year even after the drug is stopped.

-- Side effects are not common. They may include impotence, ejaculation disorder, breast tenderness, breast enlargement, reduced libido, or other hypersensitive reactions like lip swelling and rashes.

-- Should never be used by women who are trying to bear a child.

-- The drug is excreted with semen and hence condoms should be used to prevent birth defects .

2. Minoxidil:

You can see your hair grow back only as far as you use this drug. Found effective in nearly 25% of men with baldness of the crown, Minoxidil was originally used to treat high blood pressure. Should not be used by men with a history of heart disease, sudden weight gains or any other signs of heart problems.

Surgical Intervention for Male Hair Loss:

Though it might take a few months to really give you good results, hair transplants are today quite a popular way to regrow hair. This involves transplanting very small plugs of hair from other part of your scalp onto the bald patches. Today the procedure has improved technologically and can involve least scars and great outcomes.

Scalp Reduction for Male Hair Loss:

This procedure involves removing the loose skin off the scalp surgically by pulling the hair on the sides of the head up. They may even use a bit of skin on the forehead and beneficially it will help you to lessen your wrinkles!

Tissue Expansion for Male Hair Loss:

This procedure involves removing that part of the scalp which is increased up three times its original size by inserting tiny balloons beneath the scalp.
